From the idea to the desire to participate in the fight for the climate
From the idea to the desire to participate in the fight for the climate on August 9th 2021.Climate change in question.I am hit in the head and then in the heart by the IPCC report in August 2021.Emotion overwhelms me, I feel heavy, I come to my senses and excitement takes over.I calm down and think. What to do? Convince myself that only the political leaders are in charge?Believe that the world's companies will move quickly and strongly towards decarbonization?Wait for others to get involved? Continue to think that small personal actions are ineffective or that individuals have no weight in the fight for the climate? What will my children and grandchildren think? My conviction was suddenly clear: we are ALL concerned for OUR Earth. My sense of duty upsets me and ends up inciting me into action. A very strong commitment to help raise awareness and encourage everyone to commit to the climate.A sporting means - being neither a scientist nor an environmental specialist - by laying a stone to serve the planet and those who populate it.The direction to take for the Odyssey project quickly became obvious. The objectives are clear, the means to convince are innovative and the motivations are carried by women and men of three generations - from all backgrounds and all conditions- who are going to row the greatest distance ever undertaken. The age - I am 75 years - is not an obstacle if you give yourself the means. The motivation is strong, the objectives give meaning to the challenge. I am happy to lead this fair and universal fight.Another large-scale oceanic project after the Atlantic crossing of the 4 Pappys in 2020.The difficulties are increasing and we will be supported by millions of inhabitants of the Earth. We will do it with faith and joy in our hearts.
Bernard Gerbeau
He arrived one sunny morning in August to talk to me about a subject he had been working on for 3 days- he had told me so on the phone. He looked preoccupied, even though he was always laughing. He immediately started talking, looking me in the eyes, as if to identify my reactions. It was certainly not difficult for him to perceive my emotions because he knew my commitment to the environment, ecology, and the humanist struggles that have marked my life for a long time.He seemed at one point to want to take a break in the course of his explanation.I offered him coffee, which he declined. He was still scrutinizing my eyes while continuing to develop his story. He went from his questions about the climate, to the description of his research on the internet, to a form of synthesis of his 3 days spent as if in apnea diving at the bottom of the world climate crisis. He seemed already informed and decided to do something. He ended by telling me :- I don't want my children and grandchildren to say to me one day "And you, Grandpa, what have you done for the planet you are leaving us?"What do you think?I couldn't help but smile. Since the Atlantic crossing, I have known him to be passionate, frank and determined. We were still standing.I heard myself answer without really having time to think about it: “We’ll cross the Pacific!” In turn he finally smiled. This idea of the Pacific we sometimes talked about as a possible desire if we wanted to experience again strong sensations before becoming too old.He then looked at me intensely : “ I anticipated your answer, you have built your life so much on commitment.”He then offered me a seat. And the magic came over him, he was giving me such a clear vision of what was going to become a project that I knew I would stick with as it developed. Why make it a human adventure with no modern precedent.- the height of the challenge deserves this level of commitment. The vision of an even greater crossing- to continue what we have already undertaken for another cause. The desire to carry out the sporting challenge with women and men of all generations- because that's what the people of the Earth are made of.Why try to inspire with such a piece of bravery? Because most humans like to follow acts of daring. How to get millions of people and businesses interested and engaged?By bringing them daily examples and ideas that will help them understand what their future interests and those of their descendants will be.And to simplify their engagement : offering them a simple process by following us to support us and discover what is already being done around the world and near them.I obviously had my place in this project, to which I immediately, and subsequently, brought new proposals. There was nothing left to do but to go for it.After all, hadn't he previously asked me to rename myself (3 Philippe on board during the Atlantic crossing) and hadn't I chosen "Yaka"? (in French: “Go for it”)
